This project turned a horribly outdated fireplace into the centrepiece of the entire house.

  • This project cleans up the end of this living room and provides a huge amount of hidden storage.

  • This is what this end of the room looked like before the makeover.

  • I refinished the existing brass doors to match the new concept.

  • The tiles surrounding the fireplace were the clients choice. I would likely have gone for something with a little more character but the downlighting makes them look great at night.

  • The clients requested that the new wall to wall hearth to be finished in a solid colour. I thought a more variegated natural concrete look would have been much more striking.

  • The left side features three huge drawers on the bottom.

  • Don't you just hate those rickety fireplace tool stands? I know I think they are an eyesore. Here's my solution.

  • TV hidden behind bifold door.

  • High quality mounting arm for flat screens is essential.

  • This open space on the right will likely house photos, books or a small audio system.

  • Outlet and switch for downlights.

  • The integrated woodbox is one of my favourite details.
